In the News:
Avelin Tacon has written an article
for the state employee newspaper, "FTE". His article involves dogs,
bicycles, and personal injury claims. The article is scheduled to
appear in the July issue.
Relay for Life:
Connolly Tacon & Meserve sponsors a team
at Relay for Life, which raises funds for the American Cancer Society.
This year's Relay was held on June 25th and 26th at Black Hills High
School. CTM raised over $50,000 so far, and leads all 63 teams in
its fundraising efforts. This is the third year that the team has led
Thurston County in fundraising. In support of our Relay efforts, the firm sponsored a
St. Patrick's Day party, "Blarney Blast 2010". We raised over $9,000
and had the opportunity to honor our partner Jim Connolly, who was diagnosed
with kidney cancer in December. To donate visit our

Washington Super Lawyers:
Connolly, Tacon & Meserve
lawyers Chris Meserve and Chuck Szurszewski were named by
Washington Law and Politics
Magazine as Super Lawyers for 2010. These
attorneys have received this recognition for several years in a row.
Attorneys are selected through a Blue Ribbon Panel and independent research.
Only 5% of Lawyers licensed in Washington are designated "Super Lawyers".
Special Olympics:
Lenny Lucenko and Avelin Tacon volunteered at the Summer Special Olympics
on June 5, 2010 at Ft. Lewis, Washington. Both attorneys participate in
the Special Olympics every year.

prenuptials and it is scheduled to appear in the June issue.
YMCA Youth Legislature:
Avelin Tacon, Chuck Szurszewski and Chris
Meserve will be hosting high school students in Olympia for the 2010
YMCA Youth Legislature.
The Youth Legislature, meets annually in Olympia to give high school
students an opportunity to experience the Legislature in action. The
students stay 4 days and enact mock legislation.
YMCA Mock Trial:
Avelin Tacon and Lenny Lucenko
volunteered at the YMCA
Mock Trial Competition which was held in Olympia at the Thurston County
Courthouse in March. Avelin has served as a rater or judge annually
for this competition since 1998.
American Academy of
Matrimonial Lawyers:
Chris Meserve and Chuck Szurszewski
attended the annual meeting of the Washington chapter of the
American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers
in April. This year, the AAML sponsored the symposium of the Family
Law Council of Community Property States. The FLCCPS is a consortium
of representatives from the nine community property states. The
Council meets annually in a different state to discuss family law topics of
common interest. This year's symposium topic was: "Valuation and
Disposition Strategies in a Changing Economy."
CLE Presentations:
Chris Meserve recently spoke at a
Continuing Legal Education seminar in Seattle entitled "Tough Talk With
Family Law Clients: Practical Tips from the Trenches." Her
particular presentation addressed the problems of handling debt issues in
dissolution actions. Chris also gave a presentation on prenuptial
agreements to the South Sound Estate Planning Council.
Chuck Szurszewski was elected to a three year
term on the Family Law Executive Committee of the Washington State Bar
Association. As part of his responsibilities he spoke at a Skills
Training Seminar in Spokane in April. Chuck was also a speaker at the
midyear meeting of the Family Law Section. His original topic was "I'm
in Love with a Deadbeat," which was renamed by the WSBA as "Don't Let Your
Clients Throw Caution to the Wind -- What You Need to Understand About
Protecting Clients from Spousal Debt."
Jonathan Sprouffske was a featured speaker
at this year's Family Law midyear meeting in Vancouver, Washington.
Jonathan was asked to address family law attorneys on issues pertaining to
debt collections and bankruptcy.

Carter Hick has written an article for
the state employee newspaper, "FTE". The title of Carter's article is
"Spring and Summer Means More Bicycle Commuters" and it is scheduled to
appear in the May issue.
Washington Rising Stars:
CTM lawyer Carter Hick was just identified by
Washington Law and
Politics Magazine as a “Rising Star” for 2010.
The “Rising Star” award honors
lawyers under the age of 40, or within their first 10 years of practice.
Carter Hick Appointed to
Morningside Board of Trustees:
In April, Carter
began his term as a member of the Board of Trustees for the non-profit
organization, Morningside.
The organization started in a church basement in 1964 by offering various
treatment, care, social, educational and vocational programs to people with
disabilities. The good work continues to this day with Morningside’s
mission to advance “the employment and self-sufficiency of people with
disabilities and other significant barriers to employment.” Carter is
thrilled to be a part of this outstanding organization and looks forward to
contributing to its mission more actively by serving as a member of its
Board of Trustees.

Honored:
Chris Meserve and Chuck Szurszewski were
named by Washington Law and Politics Magazine as two of the Top 25 Family
Law Attorneys in Washington State. The list was published in the
Winter 2009 edition of the magazine. Chris and Chuck were the only two
attorneys honored from Thurston County. |
